Editors Notes

Welcome to 2018, almost. In a few hours we start a whole new year.

This is the start, for me, of a new direction in my life. I’ve been playing with all kinds of ideas over the past year, trying to figure out how I want to spend the rest of my life.

I just turned 70 this past December 6th. I’m not completely surprised that I’ve managed to live this long. Both sides of my family are long-lived. My grandmother lived to 99 and was sharp as a tack until the day she died. I don’t know if I will be that fortunate. I hope so.

During the past month, I’ve been exploring who I am and what I want to do for the rest of my life. I’ve been working to answer two questions: (1) What can I look forward to with positive expectations when I get up in the morning, and (2) what can I look back on as I go to bed at night with a feeling of accomplishment.

I have decided to take a journey into writing fiction. Along the way, I will publish columns in this blog, publish short stories in PDF form on this website, promote occasional workshops and seminars on the subject of self-publishing and, in the course of time, publish books.

Do I expect to become a millionaire through my writing? No. I want to develop a business model that can pay its own expenses and provide me with a comfortable living along the way. Will it be easy? Maybe not, but the challenge will be more than enough to keep me interested exploring ideas and writing about them for the rest of my life.

As I write these columns, I will share some business and marketing ideas and publish them as PDFs. Some of the ideas I share will come from my experiences in broadcasting, copywriting and my corporate jobs. Still others will be the result of my ongoing passion to research different applications of the same basic concept.

One thing I want to make very clear. I am NOT a business expert. I am NOT a so-called guru. I DO NOT have a magic formula to turn anyone into a world-class writer and overnight millionaire. No one does!

The “secret” to success is answering one question – Will this business give me the lifestyle I want to enjoy? The answer is either yes or no. No shades of grey. If the answer is yes, go for it. If the answer is no, either explore the options that will make the idea work for you, or move on.

The second “secret” is knowledge that leads to self-understanding. Any education of value is self-education. At one point in my life I taught radio and television production at the college level as a TA. Of all the students that went through the curriculum, only a hand full went into broadcasting and stayed in it as a career. The experience was not a waste, because those students that went on to other professions learned that they weren’t suited for the demands of the broadcasting business. All education is self-education.

My goal for 2018 is to start making a living as a full-time fiction writer. If you want to join me on my daily journey, feel free. Along the way, I will share some ideas that may have a transforming influence on your life. ##
